Breast health beyond the mammogram: why thermography is the safer, smarter option

This week I’ve been re-reading some of Dr Christiane Northrup’s work (if you haven’t discovered her yet, she’s a pioneer in women’s health and such a powerful voice for female empowerment).

One line that stuck with me was about how women often ignore or fight against their bodies – instead of listening to the messages our symptoms are trying to share. Rather than seeing bloating, PMS, hot flashes or tender breasts as “random annoyances,” we can reframe them as clues. Gentle nudges from the body saying: “Hey, something’s out of balance here, can you pay attention?”

That shift in perspective alone is powerful, because when it comes to breast health, the mainstream message is often fear-based: “book your mammogram, cross your fingers, hope for the best.” But what if instead of waiting for problems to appear, we could actually see early signs of inflammation and imbalance before disease ever develops?

This is where thermography comes in, a safe, radiation-free, non-invasive tool that can give us a whole new level of insight into our breast health.

The mammogram problem

Let’s get this out of the way: mammograms are the “gold standard” in conventional medicine, but they come with real concerns.

  • Radiation exposure: Repeated radiation over time is not something most of us want to casually add into our yearly schedule.

  • Compression: If you’ve ever had a mammogram, you know it’s… not pleasant, and yes, that compression can actually damage delicate breast tissue.

  • False positives & unnecessary biopsies: Countless women have been through anxiety, invasive testing, or even treatment for something that may never have progressed to harm them.

  • Limited accuracy in dense breast tissue: Especially common in younger women and those still cycling.

Even Dr Christiane Northrup herself has spoken out about the risks of over-relying on mammograms, encouraging women to look at alternatives that empower, not frighten.

Why Thermography is Different

Thermography (or a thermogram) uses infrared imaging to detect subtle heat patterns in the body. These patterns can show early signs of inflammation, increased blood flow, or other changes that happen years before something might show up on a mammogram.

Here’s why women (myself included) love it:

  • No radiation — safe for annual or even bi-annual monitoring.

  • No compression — just a heat-sensitive camera capturing images.

  • Whole-body insights — not just breast health, but thyroid, lymph, vascular health, even dental inflammation.

  • Early detection of risk patterns — meaning you can take action long before disease has a chance to develop.

As Dr Sherrill Sellman puts it: “Thermography allows us to see the terrain of the body, not just the tumour.”

What the experts say

  • Dr Christiane Northrup has long encouraged women to use thermography as part of a proactive approach to breast health, rather than waiting for crisis.

  • Dr Carolyn Dean, author of The Magnesium Miracle, reminds us that magnesium deficiency is linked with everything from painful periods to breast tenderness and even higher risks of fibrocystic changes. Her solution? Simple: restore magnesium daily through food and supplementation.

  • Dr Libby Weaver often speaks about “Rushing Woman’s Syndrome” – how chronic stress chemistry wreaks havoc on female hormones. Stress elevates cortisol and depletes progesterone, leaving estrogen unbalanced which is a recipe for breast and hormonal issues.

  • Barbara O’Neill teaches the basics beautifully: real food, clean water, movement, sunshine, detoxing the home, and listening to your body are your first lines of defence against chronic disease.

Together, their message is clear: women’s health doesn’t have to be fear-based. It can be proactive, natural, and empowering.

Thermography in Australia

Thermography is available here in Australia — including right here on the Gold Coast. A few reputable clinics:

These clinics use certified equipment and provide reports you can take to your naturopath, integrative GP, or health coach to create a personalised prevention plan.

Prevention is powerful

Thermography is incredible but it’s only part of the puzzle. Real breast health comes from what you do every single day. Prevention is about creating a body that is inhospitable to disease and thriving with energy.

Here are my go-to daily prevention habits:

  • Eat real, whole foods – minimise ultra-processed junk, nourish with fresh protein, healthy fats, veggies, and fruit (source from an organic butcher and farmers market is possible).

  • Support your gut – your microbiome plays a huge role in hormone balance. (My For Her Probiotic is a daily essential for this).

  • Get morning sunlight – resets your hormones and boosts vitamin D for immune + breast health.

  • Move your body daily – strength training, walking, dancing, yoga, whatever gets you moving.

  • Detox your home – switch to low-tox cleaning, body care, and makeup to reduce endocrine disruptors (this is a big factor and you can read more about it here).

  • Magnesium daily – whether through diet or supplementation, magnesium supports hormone balance and breast tissue health.

  • Stress release – journaling, breathwork, meditation, or a good cry with a friend – emotional health is physical health.

  • Self-checks – get to know your own body. Regularly check your breasts for changes in texture, lumps, or tenderness. Knowledge = power.

Breast health shouldn’t be scary, it should be empowering and thermography offers women a safe, radiation-free, proactive tool to monitor breast and hormonal health — one that actually supports prevention, not just detection.

Dr Northrup reminds us: “Our bodies are wise. When we listen, they tell us everything we need to know.”

So listen to your body’s whispers, prioritise daily prevention, and consider thermography as your new annual ritual of empowerment, because your breasts (and your future self) deserve more than fear, they deserve thriving, radiant health.💕
