Top Root Causes of Skin Issues and Hair Loss After 30, 40 & Beyond (And What to Do About Them)
You know that feeling when you look in the mirror and wonder, “Where did my glow go?” Or you run your fingers through your hair and notice more strands than usual coming out? (been there!) It can be frustrating, disheartening, and downright confusing – especially when you’re doing all the right things.
The truth is, skin complaints and hair thinning are incredibly common in our 30s, 40s and beyond, and they’re often connected to the hormonal shifts that can happen during perimenopause. But that doesn’t mean we should normalise it or that you’re stuck with it, far from it.
Your body is constantly communicating with you — and once you understand what it’s trying to say, you can start giving it exactly what it needs to heal, thrive and glow again (sounds beautiful right!)
Hormones are powerful little messengers. As estrogen, progesterone, and even testosterone levels start to fluctuate in your 30s and 40s, your skin and hair are often the first places you’ll see changes:
- Dry, dull, or sagging skin: Estrogen plays a key role in collagen production, moisture retention, and elasticity.
- Adult acne or random breakouts: Hormonal imbalances (like estrogen dominance or low progesterone) can increase sebum production and inflammation.
- Hair thinning, especially at the crown or temples: This is often linked to a drop in estrogen and an increase in androgens, or a sluggish thyroid.
These shifts are natural, but they don’t mean you’re destined for dry skin and limp hair forever. Let’s talk solutions.
Beyond hormones, there are deeper root causes that are often overlooked:
🧠 Stress overload – Chronic stress raises cortisol, which disrupts hormonal balance and steals nutrients from your hair and skin.
💤 Poor sleep – This is when your body detoxifies, heals, and regenerates. Skimp on sleep and your glow will suffer (even one night of disrupted sleep shows on our skin).
🧴 Toxin exposure – Endocrine disruptors in skincare, plastics, and even perfume can interfere with your body’s ability to balance hormones and detox properly (this is one of the reasons I switched to all-natural skincare and makeup and threw out all my perfume years ago – highly toxic).
🦠 Gut imbalances – This is a big one. An unhealthy gut can’t absorb nutrients properly, regulate hormones, or reduce inflammation — all key for clear skin and healthy hair growth.
✨ Add in healthy fats daily: Think avocado, olive oil, ghee and fatty fish. These are essential for hormone production, skin barrier health, and shiny, strong hair.
✨Focus on protein: You need protein to build collagen and keratin (hello, skin & hair). Aim for clean sources at every meal and note the minimum protein requirements for women: 0.75g/kilogram of body weight/day (Source: Dietitians Australia) so for example 0.75g x 60kg = 45g protein per day.
✨ Minerals are magic: Zinc, magnesium, and silica are vital for skin healing and hair strength. Pumpkin seeds, leafy greens and bone broth are your new BFFs.
✨ Ditch the synthetics: Switch to natural skincare and haircare free from parabens, sulphates, and artificial fragrance.
✨ Try scalp massage: Boost blood flow to the scalp with 5 minutes of daily massage using a wooden brush or your fingertips — it really works.
✨ Support your liver: Your liver helps detox old hormones. Love it with milk thistle, dandelion/root tea, green tea, curcumin, cruciferous veggies, and minimal if any alcohol.
When your gut is happy, everything else starts to fall into place:
- Nutrients are absorbed properly.
- Hormones are metabolised and eliminated efficiently.
- Inflammation stays low.
- Your skin clears and your hair grows.
