Is It Really Disease… Or Just a Deficiency?

Do you ever feel like your body is falling apart even though all your tests come back “normal”? You’re eating well, trying to stay active, doing all the right things, but you’re still bloated, moody, gaining weight (especially around the midsection), or struggling to sleep through the night. Maybe your PMS feels more intense, your gut is unpredictable, your hair’s thinning, or you just can’t seem to shift the constant feeling of fatigue.

For so many women in their late 30s and 40s, this season of life comes with a cascade of symptoms: thyroid concerns, hormonal chaos, slowed metabolism, autoimmune flare-ups, anxiety, PMS, constipation, food sensitivities – the list goes on. And unfortunately, a lot of these women get told, “That’s just perimenopause,” or worse – “It’s all in your head.”

But what if the real issue is something far more simple, overlooked, and actually fixable?

Could It Be a Deficiency Disguised as Disease?

Human biologist and wellness expert Gary Brecka has shared that many chronic symptoms and even disease diagnoses stem from nutrient deficiencies, not irreversible conditions. When your body is missing foundational nutrients – vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids – it begins to malfunction. That dysfunction often presents as symptoms that get misdiagnosed as anxiety, depression, IBS, autoimmune disease, or even hormonal imbalance.

Dr. Libby Weaver, a respected nutritional biochemist, also speaks about this modern epidemic of depletion in women. She says, “So many women are pouring from an empty cup—physically, emotionally, and biochemically. It’s no wonder their bodies are crying out for help.”

The Cracks Begin to Show in Your 40s

Your 40s can feel like your body’s turning against you, but often, it’s not age, it’s accumulation. Years of stress, diet culture, synthetic birth control, environmental toxins, alcohol, processed food, sleep deprivation and go-go-go living quietly deplete the body’s nutrient reserves.

Some of the most common deficiencies I see in women in this season of life include:

1. B Vitamins (especially B6, B12, and folate)

B vitamins are crucial for energy, mood regulation, hormone synthesis, and detoxification. But many women are unknowingly deficient, especially those with the MTHFR gene mutation, which impacts the body’s ability to process folic acid into usable folate. Without enough methylated B vitamins, symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, and hormonal imbalance become more common.

2. Zinc & Copper Imbalance

Zinc is essential for immune function, thyroid health, skin, and reproductive hormones. But when copper levels are too high and zinc is too low (a very common imbalance in women), you can experience everything from PMS to hair thinning, anxiety, skin issues, and stubborn weight gain  (any of these sound familiar?)

3. Magnesium, Potassium & Sodium

Modern diets and stress patterns burn through minerals like magnesium. Low magnesium can trigger sleep issues, muscle cramps, constipation, period pain, and mood swings. Sodium and potassium imbalances also affect blood pressure, energy levels, and water retention.

4. Iron & Ferritin

Heavy periods, pregnancies, or gut issues can deplete iron and ferritin stores, leading to fatigue, dizziness, cold hands and feet, and poor oxygenation of cells, especially if you’re not absorbing nutrients due to poor gut function.

And here’s the kicker: standard blood tests don’t always pick these up. Most panels only flag extremes, so you might be functioning at the very bottom of the “normal” range and still feel terrible.

Your Symptoms are Valid and Often Reversible

If you’re nodding your head thinking, this is me, then I want you to know that you don’t have to accept feeling this way. With the right data, you can start making real progress. This is where targeted testing becomes powerful.

One of the most eye-opening tests I recommend is the Genetic Methylation Panel by i-screen. It looks at key genes that influence your ability to detox, create energy, process B vitamins, and regulate inflammation. If you’ve ever wondered why you feel worse on certain supplements or why your body doesn’t “bounce back” like it used to, this test can give you answers.

You’ll learn whether your body is able to methylate efficiently (essential for hormone balance, mood, and detoxification), and if you have specific gene variants that could explain long-standing symptoms and unlike a blood test (which only gives you a snapshot in time), you only ever need to do this test once and it is like having the ultimate handbook for your body.

Support Your Body. Don’t Just Suppress Symptoms

Once you understand what your body’s missing, you can begin to nourish it correctly. Here’s where the magic happens:

  • Add in bioavailable B vitamins (especially P5P and methylated folate)

  • Balance your zinc and copper levels with a hair tissue mineral analysis

  • Rebuild your gut lining with fermented foods, minerals and spore-based probiotics

  • Prioritize daily movement and gentle liver support

  • And finally, get curious and compassionate with your body, instead of frustrated (easier said than done I know!)

I also recommend taking a quality probiotic specifically formulated for women’s hormonal and digestive health. For Her contains spore-based strains (naturally able to protect themselves from the harsh environment of the stomach and are resistant to stomach acid, digestive enzymes and bile acid) and is designed to help repopulate the microbiome, improve gut motility, and support estrogen detox – all crucial for women in their 30s and 40s navigating hormonal transitions.

The truth is, you don’t need to wait for a diagnosis or settle for daily discomfort. Many of the symptoms you’re dealing with are not signs of inevitable aging, they’re signals of nutrient depletion.

Let’s stop masking symptoms and start asking deeper questions.
